How I can tell I'm starting to get old.

These Italy photos have nothing to do with getting old but i can do that since it's my blog.

Selfie on the train out of Florence
I'm 57 years old.

Do you find yourself doing this? I am often shocked by the number of years that have passed from a milestone event or when i first saw a favorite movie. Then i calculate those same number of years and come up with how old I will be and it scares me since those years feel more like they happened only a half dozen years ago instead of twice that.

For example, it doesn't feel like it's been 12 years since my wedding to Brian. Yet when that much time passes again I will be 69 years old. The Shawshank Redemption movie came out in 1994. I so remember when that movie was released. I will be 77 years old when that much times passes.

Yikes.
i liked the font on this sign

That's how i know I'm getting old. I continually do this! Am i weird?

Other ways that i can tell:

1. I get irritated with hearing the kid's gleeful screams from the pool.

2. My eyelashes are getting skimpier, yet my eyebrows are getting more wooly. Plus my eyebrows have many gray hairs!

3. I have always had wrinkles, the parenthetical ones between my eyebrows actually had to be airbrushed out of my first wedding photos in 1978 (at the age of 21.)

OMG, i just did the math on how old i will be when that much time passes. I will be 93 years old. If i'm lucky.

4. I know i'm getting old because i need a calculator to figure all this out. (I used to be so much better doing stuff like that in my head.)

5. Anyway, back to what i was going to say about my face and getting older. (Digressing is another sign....) I have always had wrinkles so that's not the big deal, what i don't like is getting more jowly!

6. I keep having to upgrade my reader magnification. First it was 1.25, then 1.5, and now it's 1.75, all in the space of less than three years. I have about 14 pairs of readers lying around the house. The people who manufacture readers should be shot. I can never tell the power of my readers because i can't read the little inscription on the stems that tell you.

7. I am probably going to have to give up running soon. I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot. It comes and goes. Probably started with my beauty bark injury last September. Some mornings and evenings my heel hurts so much it is painful just to walk. Then it goes away, only to come back. I've been running for more than half my life - since 1980. And this makes me sad.

OMG, when that much time passes again I will be 91 years old!

8. I still like to listen to my music loud, but now i'm not so sure if it's not because i am getting hard of hearing!

9. I still read a lot. (In fact i have already read a dozen books this summer.) But i find myself going back to re-read or find out who is who because i have trouble keeping the characters straight.

10. The reason i am able to read a dozen books is because i am up for nearly two hours at least every night reading since another sign of age is not sleeping well.

11. I still write checks. I don't own a cell phone. And i still play cds and DVDs instead of streaming movies from netlfix. (Because our main TV is still one of those analog types.)  I still blog. However, at least i have finally used an ATM machine!

12. But i can't remember my PIN number anymore.

13. Oh, i think i just remembered it!

How I can tell I’m starting to get old:

Jo is starting to get old and I am older than she is.

My hands. Don’t know why those age spots surprise me every time I see them.

My eyesight is worse than ever – and it was never good. When I renewed my driver’s license I almost failed the vision test, wearing my glasses. I blame my allergies that day though, not my age.

Am having more nad more trouble finishing a sentence – I just srt of just wander off in my head.. .

I get stiff more easily and need to stretch more; I just don’t.

Already had my varicose vein surgery.

Can’t think of ten things at any one time.

I so relate to the age calculation thing.

My version is when The Wonder Years premiered in 1989, the show took place 20 years prior in 1969. I remember watching that as an 11 year old and thinking how old-fashioned things were 20 years prior. They could have done a 2009 version that took place in 1989, and that would seem so old-fashioned to today's youth (no cell phones, internet!). Wait they have done it, and it's the Goldbergs.

My friend's kids are getting big. I'm now the grandma equivalent who says, "Look how tall you're getting, Sonny!"

Gahhhhh! Just wrote a lovely long comment and lost it all. Short form:
Silver hair nice for taking the shock out of it. I went full silver 20 years ago, in my early 40s. Low maintenance, too.
Less patient than I used to be and I don't suffer fools worth a damn.
Our friends and my husband are so much older than I and it keeps me feeling young!

Love reading allofy'all's stuff too! I should have taken a photo of my hands. They look like an 85 year old lady's hands.

Damn iPad. By any chance pearl are you typing on one? I keep getting frozen out on mine and have to publish and start a new comment.

Anyway i was going to add that i would let my hair grow out with its natural color if i had your color gray.

dammit! i don't know why it does this. If i stop typing and scroll up then it stops anymore typing in the comment box. I think i mentioned this before here that i once had a Needs Improvement on my evaluation from the union office with a comment "Jo does not suffer fools". It cracked me up because it was true and i wasn't even old then! (this was about 1998.)

oops, i scrolled up to read Bethany's comment about The Wonder Years and got frozen out again. BEthany, YOU just made me feel old by saying you were only 11 years old when that was on! hahahahaha....

P.S. louie, are you reading Comics Curmudgeon online anymore? I checked it out www.joshreads.com is still the URL. Guess who is on there at the top? Yes, Mary Worth. OK, the subject line was this:

"Get Down to the Sea Somehow". And i knew it was from a song when i looked at it yesterday but i could not remember the song until this morning (and i did that without Googling it.) It made me feel good to know it, but also made the point of being old too - that's the hint of what the song is. Do any of you know which song is being referenced?

Yes - it was on my ipad. drives me nuts. will be mostly offline after Sunday - off to Italy!

HAve a great time pearl! How easily YOU travel to Europe. hahahaha....

OK, nobody knows the song? Another hint. the artist's initials are JB.

Is it a Jackson Browne song? The one about the water? I can't think of the name. I need to fire up my Google machine!

Rock me on the Water!

jojo cucina cucina said...

YES!!!! We have a winner! I did NOT Google that when i remembered it. It finally came to me. I kept trying to sing the lyric and that's when it hit me. I love Jackson Browne and had nearly everything of his on vinyl. Then he wasn't so good during the Daryl Hannah years.

i never bought the vinyl i had on cds or through iTunes because i liked the specialness of summer when i played them on my outside record player hi-fi. But that thing finally broke. I believe that Rock Me on The Water was from the Saturate Before Using record.

I even had hid Lawyers in Love on vinyl. That may have been the last one i bought until his Volume 1 and another one with the word 'Conqueror' in the title.

Also i saw him in concert in Seattle with Keb Mo and Bonnie Raitt when they were doing the concerts for change during the John Kerry election.
