It's Thursday. I'm drinking chardonnay. I got stuff on my mind.

Menu of the Day:

Music: YouTube of Ryan Adams doing an acoustic cover of New York New York. (Do not confuse this with the Sinatra version. Which i love, by the way.

Drinking: Some really fat chardonnay. It's so buttery it's like drinking a liquid croissant!

The Best Thing this week: Connecting with my friend Karie. We started running together last Monday and plan to keep doing it. She's a good runner and we run for an hour and it seems like no time passed at all.

The Other Best Thing: in our union office we have tapped into and organized a new group of folks who i love being around. We've been organizing phone banks around our Gubernatorial primary. And this group that we went out and handpicked is so awesome. Not only did they all show up, our completed calls last night were nearly double (and triple in some cases), surpassing every other  union offices around our state. The leaders in headquarters are calling us, asking us how we do it.

The Answer: Gummi bear prizes! (That's what i tell them!)

Why this is cool: Our office is one of the lowest staffed and least funded offices and we are normally always behind.

OK... on with the stuff:

*****************************************

1. I want to be working on Obama's campaign.  But i know i won't have the kind of time to focus on both. And the Governor race is important to my livelihood, given how we are vilifying unions these days. I've already done two rounds of phone banking and most of my work day is spent recruiting people to help. (It's not easy work. EVERYONE hates the phone!)

2. Me, most of all. (I use that as a recruitment tool.)

3. Which brings me to my rant:
Gawddamit. Why are we hating on unions and public schools? Why aren't we going after that Fuckwad from Chase Bank who blew a $2 billion trading deal ? Or the BP oil company who nearly killed off the Gulf of Mexico? Or all those other banks and the mortgage shit that we are going to be living with for years and have put so many middle class people out of work?

3. The reason i'm not crazy about working the Governor race is because i don't think he's towing a hard Democrat line. He's playing it a little too safe, dodging some of the issues. But i really REALLY don't like the other guy and i'm afraid we will end up like Wisconsin if the Republican candidate gets in.

4. Too bad Island pearl isn't posting anymore. I would welcome her response.

5. Republicans NEVER pander and I wish that Democrats would quit doing it.

6. And i wish they would quit calling me.

7. Different subject. Gawdamn menopause. I'm having the worst night sweats since my doctor took me off the birth control pills )which used to help). Every single night I wake up like i wet the bed and i have to change my shirt 2 or 3 times. When is was taking those hormones i was only doing that about once or twice a week the past year, which was an improvement, but not anymore.

8. Father's Day is Sunday. I hate Father's Day. I like my dad more than i like my mom,  but because she won't let us take my dad out to his favorite bar down the street without her like we did last year, I'm just going to drop off a present and have a beer with him at his house. He's gotten so thin this past year that i wonder if he will be around next year. He's only 76 years old but he probably shouldn't be alive at all since he smokes about 3 packs a day, eats red meat probably 4 times a week, and on the grill at that. And he drinks Coors Lite like it's oxygen.

9. I bought him the new Cronkite book and i'm going to bring him T-Bone steaks (his favorite) and a case of Coors Lite, because my mom will hate it. She even hates it when he reads. So it's the perfect gift.

I think i'm going to end on #9.

hahaha ...i love how i don't close some parenthesis and then add doubles in other places. Not closing my parenthesis is sort of a signature with me.

Watched two great old movies on the TMC channel, without commercial interruption. The Way We Were and Kramer Vs. Kramer. In the 1970's they made some pretty fabulous movies. One of the all time favorites: Serpico.

I had seen the movie The Way We Were when it came out and i realize how too young i was to understand the politics back then and the McCarthy times. And i was also too young to appreciate how amazing Robert Redford was. His acting is really so good in that movie. The same with Dustin Hoffman in Kramer Vs. Kramer. (Obviously, we already know about Meryl.)

Anyway, it made me appreciate the subtleties of acting and how these guys make it look so easy. How everything done so well is made to look so easy by the masters.

Went to see the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Sunday. My husband looooooves to go to movies so it was a good Father's day trip. I really liked the movie; didn’t expect to. It did not, however, make me want to go to England; too crowded.

(OMG I just typed England when I totally meant India. This proves it; my mind and my fingers have Alzheimer’s. I’m not kidding I am losing it!!!)

Then I served him up a dinner of bbqed Rib steaks, steamed corn on the cob, sautéed spinach with oven roasted tomatoes, grilled bread and a rhubarb crisp. All after taking him to a Mariner’s game the night before and bringing a cherry pie to church for the annual father’s’ day pie feast. Nearly outdid myself.

We’re going to Vegas at the end of the month. Ron agreed to some sales pitch vacation thing over the phone so here we go. We do have to listen to a “owners presentation” but what the heck. We are going to a Cirque du Soleil show, other than that, have made no plans. I have only been to Vegas for conferences and never with Ron. I’m thinking we can find something to do even if it’s sit around the pool (or the condo I think it will be 120 degrees) and read; I’m saving the shades of grey book. Maybe we’ll take a side trip to the Grand Canyon.

My daughter graduated last weekend. We all went for pizza in Seattle and it went surprisingly well considering the range of folks and sensibilities in our party, as well as all the weird dietary needs.

Plus she got a job!! She visited the school on Monday and liked it so she said yes and will be working there in the fall. Only trouble is her fellowship to work in a high-needs school now turns into a loan. It’s not huge though, so she can handle it, and she will have her own health insurance!

Can’t remember what the theme was of this post so figure I have rambled on long enough.

hahahahaha louie, i have to laugh that instead of correcting yourself about England vs India that you told on yourself instead.

I so love it when people do that. Amanda does that too. I don't as often as i should.

Your daughter is amazing. And like Brian said when i told him she already got a job, "OMG, who wouldn't hire Emma?"

Of course her resume, which i helped format probably got her the job!!!!

It's all in the fonts and the spacing!

hahaha,

Let's talk

Ok, if i start talking about working the political arena after retirement. Somebody stop me. Three nights of phone banking and i'm starting to get burned out on the election already and we're only doing about one-third of what we will be expected to do once the school year starts up again.

Resume? Really, mslouie?

The best movies came out of the 70s. In fact, I watched a documentary series about why movies from the 70s were better than movies from any other era. It was very convincing. I love The Way We Were, and I'm growing into a real love for Robert Redford. When I was younger, I thought he looked like a dog with all those fleshy moles on his face. Now, I think he's handsome. He has a great face and good energy. He's Jeremiah Johnson, for cripes sake.

I love The Way We Were because they loved each other so damn much and it still didn't work out. I think that's true and heartbreaking. That's also why I love Splendor in the Grass. I don't like happy endings because they're so phony. Or maybe it's just because I'm a bitter old crank and I like to see stories that reinforce what I already believe. Love doesn't work out. Everyone is unhappy.

That's very depressing. I think the 70s were depressing. The Deer Hunter. Apocalypse Now. Cuckoo's Nest. Taxi Driver. Clockwork Orange. Alien.

Incidentally, the scariest horror movies came out of the 70s. The Exorcist. The Omen. Rosemary's Baby. Last House on the Left. The Shining. Susperia.

(Actually, The Shining was 1980 and Rosemary's Baby was 1968, so those don't technically count. But, still.)

I don't know how to wrap this up now that I rambled on so long. I hate when that happens. It feels like a Seinfeld.

Amanda, you crack me up. You listed great movies. I really loved The Deer Hunter. I think i have seen that about 10 times. I was sort of in love with Christopher Walken back then.

Cuckoo's Nest is one of those movies on the top 10. But you have to admit that there are some good ones from the 90's Shawshank Redemption, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands. I'll think of some more.

I used to not think Robert Redford was all that as an actor because he seemed the same in ever movie. But now that i'm older and watching his movies when he is younger than i am now, i think he's amazing. Everything he does is understated and so real.

You know how sometimes when you see actors laughing (even really good ones) and it doesn't seem scripted. You say, oh, that's not in the script, they just started laughing or ad libbing and the director just left it in. Because it just feels more real. That's how Robert Redford acts all the time. Like he's not.

For example, that scene in Pretty Woman where Richard Gere slams the jewelry box on Julia Roberts fingers as she goes to touch the necklace. I remember thinking immediately that Richard Gere just did that and it was not part of the scene. And i think i read somewhere later that that is exactly what happened.

I loved Rosemary's Baby and The Shining.

P.S. Amanda you don't really believe love doesn't work out!!!!!
